Binance Threatens to Lose EU License After Possible Rejection of MiCA Application
Binance is on the verge of losing its access to the European market. The MiCA licence application of the world’s largest crypto exchange is expected to be rejected by the Greek regulator. That is according to Reuters, citing two sources familiar with the matter. Without a valid licence, Binance will no longer be allowed to offer services to European users from July.
Greek regulator may reject application
Under the European MiCA regulation, crypto companies must have a licence by the end of June to continue operating legally within the EU. Binance submitted its application to the Greek Hellenic Capital Market Commission, but that application is being rejected. The Greek regulator declines to comment due to confidentiality rules.
Binance itself says it has worked constructively with regulators over the past 18 months and states that it meets all relevant MiCA requirements. The company indicates that the Greek regulator considered the application compliant and that the application was also reviewed at ESMA level. Nevertheless, a rejection seems inevitable.
Binance promises to inform users before 30 June
In an official response, Binance states that it remains committed to its European users and wants to handle the situation as orderly as possible. The company says it is taking a cautious approach with customers at the centre, providing them with sufficient time and clarity. Further details about the next steps will be communicated before 30 June 2026.
Binance also points out that the outcome has implications for the broader crypto market in Europe. According to the company, a disruption in the MiCA authorisation process could lead to less liquidity, less competition and less choice for users.
Moreover, there is a risk that activities are moved outside the EU. This news follows earlier positive developments at Binance, such as the success of its stock product, which recently achieved $143 million in daily trading volume. More Binance news can be found at BlockchainStories.
