What is Stellar?

Stellar is a payments network built to move money across borders quickly and cheaply, with a strong focus on financial inclusion. It was founded in 2014 by Jed McCaleb, a Ripple co-founder, alongside Joyce Kim, and is supported by the non-profit Stellar Development Foundation. Its token, the Lumen (XLM), pays small transaction fees and helps protect the network from spam.

Stellar connects banks, payment firms and individuals through bridges called anchors, and increasingly hosts stablecoins and tokenised real-world assets.

Following the live Stellar price

On this page you will find the live Stellar price in both US dollars and euros, with the context you need to read the market. The chart opens on the last 7 days by default, and you can switch to 24 hours, 7 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or a full year. Pick a period with the buttons and the chart updates on the spot.

It is an easy way to set the short-term moves against the longer trend before you decide anything.

Market data at a glance

Beside the live rate, the page brings together:

  • The intraday high and low.
  • Market capitalisation in dollars (B for billion, M for million).
  • Combined trading volume across the major exchanges.
  • The amount of XLM in circulation, out of a roughly 50 billion total.
  • The all-time high, the date it was set and how far below it the price sits now.
  • Where you can buy XLM.
  • Links to the official website, whitepaper and social channels.

Convert XLM and see the real cost

The calculator turns any amount of XLM into dollars or euros instantly, and it works in reverse too. Alongside it sits an exchange fee calculator, so you can see what a trade really costs after fees and roughly how much XLM you would end up with, not just the headline rate.

Historical Stellar data

Under historical data you can look back at past prices on any date, shown in dollars as the market standard, with the matching trading volume and market cap.

A payments coin through the cycles

  • 2014 to 2015: Stellar launches and the token, later renamed Lumen, trades for tiny fractions of a cent.
  • January 2018: XLM reaches its all-time high near 0.94 dollars in the early-2018 bull run.
  • 2019: the foundation burns roughly half the total supply, leaving a cap around 50 billion XLM.
  • 2021: a secondary peak near 0.79 dollars during the DeFi and NFT wave, followed by a fade.
  • recent years: real-world deals, from money-transfer integrations to tokenised funds, increasingly anchor its case.

XLM’s story is less about hype and more about steady, practical adoption in payments.

What moves the Stellar price?

The value of XLM reflects supply and demand, with adoption news carrying more weight than for most coins given its payments focus. The main drivers:

Why the value climbs

  • A new payment partnership or a stablecoin issued on the network.
  • Tokenisation of real-world assets on Stellar.
  • Growth in cross-border and remittance use.
  • Positive crypto news and a risk-on market.

Why the value drops

  • A quiet stretch with little adoption news.
  • Large foundation-held supply entering circulation.
  • Market-wide downturns or a global crisis.
  • A buy the rumour, sell the news reaction.

These are not the only factors, but they cover most of the moves. For the reporting behind each shift, follow our latest Stellar news and, for a useful comparison, our Ripple news.
