Short-term holders (STH) of Bitcoin have been realising losses for nearly nine months, a pattern that analysts typically associate with a bear market. With an estimated cost basis of $68.800, this group of investors is under significant pressure, while the Bitcoin price is currently fluctuating around $65.700.

Bitcoin is available at OKX and Bybit.

Short-term holders have been bleeding for months

On-chain analyst Darkfost points to a worrying trend: STHs are currently realising a loss of around 4% while Bitcoin tries to hold above $65.000. According to him, that level is crucial for short-term sentiment. If it fails to hold this level, pressure on recent buyers will persist.

The pattern of persistent losses among short-term holders fits into a broader context in which institutional pessimism has been making its mark on the market for months. Short-term holders are typically investors who have bought Bitcoin in the past 155 days. Because they entered at higher levels, they are now sitting on losing positions.

$65.000 as key level for recovery

According to the analysis, $65.000 is the level that Bitcoin must reclaim to generate some optimism again. The market badly needs that confidence, the analyst states. On the CryptoQuant chart, it can be seen that the so-called STH Realised Price is currently around $68.800, meaning the average recent buyer is still at a loss compared to the current price.

Earlier, it was already visible that institutional demand for Bitcoin is almost disappearing, further complicating the situation for short-term holders. Yet there are also positive signals: recent ETF inflows show that large players continue to accumulate in the background. Whether that is enough to lift the price above the critical $65.000 and relieve pressure on short-term holders will become clear in the coming days.
