BitMEX and BitMart disappear: the beginning of a major sell-off at exchanges
The cryptocurrency market is undergoing a profound shift. BitMEX and BitMart are both closing their doors within a week, signalling a larger trend in the industry. This moment marks not just the end of two platforms, but the beginning of a fundamental restructuring of how traders execute their transactions.
The exchange landscape is transforming before our eyes. The reason is simple: liquidity attracts liquidity. As soon as traders leave a platform, investment funds and market makers follow. This creates a domino effect where only the strongest players remain.
The winners are already clear
At this moment, volume is increasingly concentrating around a handful of centralised exchanges. Binance, Bybit and OKX dominate the centralised derivatives market. These three platforms have reached a scale where they have become indispensable to the crypto ecosystem.
But the real change is happening on the blockchain itself. Decentralised exchanges such as Hyperliquid and Aster are proving that decentralised derivatives are no longer an experiment. These platforms are competing for real volume, real traders and real liquidity. Hyperliquid is currently trading at $58.78, up 2.1% in 24 hours.
The rise of on-chain trading
BitMEX once wrote the history of the crypto market. The platform introduced perpetual futures and dominated the derivatives trading landscape for years. Yet it is clear that the next generation of perpetual trading is happening elsewhere. The infrastructure on the blockchain is improving rapidly, making decentralised platforms increasingly competitive.
Top figures in the industry see this trend coming. Binance CEO CZ has repeatedly pointed to a future where decentralised exchanges will gain more market share. Arthur Hayes of BitMEX himself makes a similar argument: as on-chain infrastructure improves, decentralised platforms will increasingly displace centralised ones.
This will not be the last platform to disappear. The movement towards greater decentralisation is unstoppable. For traders, it is essential to stay alert and move their funds to reliable platforms before problems arise.
