Bollinger Bands Explained: When Is a Touch a Signal?

Trending or non-trending: the ADX determines your approach

The Average Directional Index, or ADX, is the key tool for reading the market environment. If the ADX is above 20, the market is in a trending phase. In that case, a touch of the upper or lower band indicates a continuation of the trend. Anyone who uses every tag of the band as a sell signal in such an environment will repeatedly get shaken out of the trend.

If the ADX drops below 20, the market is non-trending and the price moves sideways. In that case, mean reversion does work: buy at the lower band, sell at the upper band. These are two completely different strategies that depend on a single number.

Confirmation is everything in a reversal setup

Even in a non-trending market, you should not blindly enter on a band touch. Crypto_birb describes the Two Bar Reversal pattern as a basic confirmation: the price closes outside the band, and the next candle reverses and closes back inside the band. Only on that confirmation bar do you enter, with a stop just below the low of the reversal.

Additional confirmation comes from the Accumulation Distribution Oscillator (ADO). If the price touches the lower band while the ADO turns positive, that is a strong buy signal. If the price touches the upper band while the ADO turns negative, that is a short setup. Without that confirmation, it remains noise.
