A British investor who thought he had lost his Bitcoin forever has recovered his money after more than ten years. Chris bought Bitcoin in 2011 for around £1.500, when the price was still below $4. When the British exchange Intersango shut its doors, he lost access to his funds. Now, more than a decade later, it turns out to be an amount of $4.5 million.

Bitcoin is available at OKX and Bybit.

In short:

  • British investor lost access to Bitcoin bought for £1.500 in 2012, now recovered at a value of $4.5 million.
  • CEL Solicitors and crypto experts traced a wallet containing more than 5,500 BTC belonging to former Intersango users.
  • Other former Intersango users may also be able to reclaim their funds if they can prove ownership.

Lost access due to failed exchange

Chris bought his Bitcoin in 2011 through Britcoin, later renamed Intersango. When the platform stopped, his access to the coins seemed permanently gone. For years he watched the Bitcoin price rise explosively, believing his own coins were forever out of reach.

What at the time looked like a loss of around $2.000 has since grown into a fortune. Bitcoin is currently trading at around $79.700, up 1.1% in the past 24 hours.

Experts trace wallet with more than 5,500 BTC

The firm CEL Solicitors brought in crypto tracing experts to search for wallets linked to former Intersango users. That search turned up a wallet containing more than 5,500 BTC. After successfully proving ownership, Chris was able to get his funds back.

According to those involved, other former Intersango users may be able to do the same, provided they can prove that the coins belong to them. For people who bought Bitcoin through the platform at the time and have had no access since, this news could therefore be relevant.
