Charles Hoskinson, co‑founder of Cardano, has finally given a concrete answer during a recent AMA to questions about 1,096 Bitcoin that were held by the Isle of Man Foundation for years. According to him, these are Bitcoin that were used in 2016 and 2017 to meet requirements concerning Michael Parsons and the original audit process. That amount of Bitcoin is currently worth approximately $70 million, while the Bitcoin price stands at $65K.

Crypto bankruptcy expert Thomas Braziel cites Hoskinson’s statements and immediately asks critical questions. If this explanation is correct, he wants to see evidence.

Bitcoin is available at OKX and Bybit.

Braziel demands transparency over the payments

Braziel argues that if Hoskinson’s explanation is correct, documentation must be put on the table. Invoices, agreements, approvals and payment receipts must show where exactly the 1,096 Bitcoin went, who received them and why. Without those documents, the explanation remains unverifiable.

So it is not just about whether the money was spent properly, but also about who made which decision. Braziel wants to know how an internal audit process could have led to the complete disappearance of an amount now worth tens of millions of dollars. The issue directly touches on the governance of the Cardano project in its early years.

Uneven distribution between IOHK and the Foundation

Braziel also raises a broader issue. IOHK, the company that Hoskinson led, ultimately controlled about 95% of all Bitcoin raised during the initial fundraising, plus billions of ADA tokens. The Isle of Man Foundation, which was officially supposed to oversee the project, received only a small share of the proceeds.

That distribution raises questions about the actual independence of the Foundation from IOHK. If the Foundation was largely dependent on IOHK for its resources, the question is whether it could effectively oversee the use of those resources. Braziel seems to want to uncover whether the structure at that time was in the interest of ordinary investors in the Cardano ecosystem.
