Blockchain analysis specialist Chainalysis is taking the US government to court over a government contract that was awarded directly to competitor TRM Labs without a public tender. The company is taking the case to the Court of Federal Claims and demands that the agreement be halted. An oral hearing is scheduled for 2 September 2026.

In brief:

  • Chainalysis accuses the Department of Homeland Security and ICE of bypassing normal procurement procedures.
  • TRM Labs has joined the case as a party on the side of the government.
  • The judge has issued a protective order due to potentially competition-sensitive information.

DHS and ICE bypassed the tender

According to Chainalysis Government Solutions, the Department of Homeland Security and its investigative service ICE awarded an exclusive contract to TRM Labs without going through the usual competitive procedures. Chainalysis says it was thereby wrongly excluded from the tender and is therefore taking the matter to court.

The company is asking the judge to block the contractual agreements between the government and TRM Labs until the case has been decided. Both parties are active in blockchain analysis for government services and are direct competitors of one another.

TRM Labs joins the case as a party

TRM Labs has joined the proceedings as a so-called defendant-intervenor, meaning it actively supports the government’s position. That means Chainalysis faces both the US government and its competitor in the courtroom.

The judge has issued a protective order, because the case is expected to contain information that is competition-sensitive. Oral arguments from both sides are scheduled for 2 September 2026. The outcome of the case could have implications for how US government agencies handle procurement in the field of blockchain analysis in the future.
