Circle buys nearly 1,000 IBM blockchain patents

Circle Internet Group announces that it is acquiring a substantial portion of IBM’s blockchain patent portfolio. It involves more than 680 patent families, amounting to nearly 1,000 globally awarded patents. With this acquisition, Circle positions itself as the largest holder of blockchain patents in the United States.

What’s in the portfolio?

The acquired patents cover a broad range of areas, including fundamental blockchain technology, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification and secure cloud operations. This makes it a strategically valuable asset for Circle, which is already active in the world of digital payments and stablecoins.

Financial details of the deal are not being disclosed. Circle and IBM have indicated that they will also explore further commercial collaboration, although there are no concrete plans at this stage.

Strengthening Circle’s position

According to the company, this extensive intellectual property directly strengthens the foundation on which Circle builds its financial internet platform. The patents support products such as USDC, the Circle Payments Network, Arc and a growing range of onchain financial tools, including so-called agentic finance products.

Circle reports in an official press release that with this step the company takes the leading position in blockchain patent ownership in the US. It is a clear signal that Circle wants to further deepen its technological foundation as the platform adds more products and services to its ecosystem.
