Elon Musk's Boring Company Aims for $20 Billion Valuation
The Boring Company, Elon Musk’s tunnel venture, is looking to raise a new financing round of as much as $4 billion. With that, the company is targeting a total valuation of $20 billion, nearly four times higher than its valuation in 2022. That is according to the Wall Street Journal. Remarkable, because several major city projects from the company never got off the ground.
Ambitious plans despite setbacks
The Boring Company has faced considerable criticism in the past. Various projects in large cities never progressed beyond the drawing board or were abandoned after much controversy. Yet the company pays little heed to that and looks confidently to the future.
The Boring Company’s strategy focuses on privately funded underground connections, without reliance on government budgets. That model appears to convince investors, as the demand for a fresh capital injection is substantial.
Nashville and Dubai as new test cases
Specifically, new tunnel projects are currently in the works in Nashville and Dubai. Those two cities serve as important showcases for the company’s technology and business model. If those projects succeed, it could further increase investor support.
Whether the $20 billion valuation is realistic remains to be seen. Critics point to the thin track record when it comes to large-scale urban projects. Musk himself, however, is known for his ability to justify high valuations, as was previously the case with SpaceX and Tesla. The coming months will show whether investors will pile in.
