Ethena and digital asset manager FalconX are jointly setting up a collateralised lending facility of $1 billion. Through this structure, the collateral behind Ethena’s synthetic dollar USDe is deployed for institutional lending, marking the protocol’s first serious move beyond the crypto world. The goal is to diversify USDe’s revenue streams and reduce its dependence on futures market funding rates.

In short:

  • Ethena and FalconX are setting up a $1 billion collateralised lending facility for institutional loans.
  • FalconX handles the origination and management of the loans, which are used for trading strategies, corporate treasury management and payments.
  • The partnership gives Ethena an additional source of income alongside funding rates on perpetual futures.

Collateral behind USDe enters the institutional market

Through the lending facility, FalconX provides so-called overcollateralised loans: loans in which the value of the collateral exceeds the amount borrowed. The loans are used for trading strategies, corporate treasury management and payments, the two parties announced.

The collateral is held with recognised third-party custodians. Ethena also retains a first security interest over the facility’s assets, meaning that Ethena has first claim on the collateral if a loan is not repaid.

Less dependence on the futures market

USDe currently generates a large portion of its yield through funding rates on perpetual futures, a mechanism in which traders pay a fee to keep long positions open. Those rates can decline or even turn negative when demand for leveraged crypto wanes, putting pressure on Ethena’s returns.

The partnership with FalconX offers a more stable complement to that revenue stream. Institutional lending, a market traditionally served by banks, typically delivers more regular returns. For Ethena, this is therefore a step towards a broader income base for USDe.
