The British financial regulator FCA is sounding the alarm with football clubs in the Premier League and other competitions. Sponsorship deals with unauthorised crypto companies and trading platforms entail serious risks according to the regulator, including legal liability, money laundering practices and reputational damage. The FCA calls on clubs to significantly tighten their checks on sponsorship partners.

Unauthorised companies abuse sports visibility

The Financial Conduct Authority states that some unauthorised crypto companies deliberately use the high visibility that football sponsorship offers to promote their products to fans. They do this while they are officially not authorised at all to operate in the United Kingdom. According to the FCA, this violates British rules on financial promotion.

Such setups pose a risk not only for the clubs themselves, but also for supporters who come into contact with services from parties that fall outside supervision. Earlier we already saw how criminals try to launder stolen crypto through various routes, and the use of sports sponsorship as a marketing channel fits into that same broader pattern of circumventing supervision.

Clubs must take responsibility themselves

The FCA explicitly places the responsibility with the clubs. According to the regulator, they are obliged to thoroughly check who they are partnering with before signing a sponsorship agreement. Linking a well-known club name to a crypto platform that does not have the proper licences can also get the club itself into legal trouble.

The warning fits into a broader trend where British regulators are increasingly cracking down on unauthorised providers in the crypto sector. While large traditional parties such as Charles Schwab makes plans for regulated crypto spot trading, there remain players active who deliberately operate outside the regular regulatory framework and try to conceal that through sports marketing.
