German banks bring crypto trading to millions of customers
The German crypto market is on the verge of a significant growth spurt. Millions of Germans will soon be able to buy and sell cryptocurrencies through their own bank, without having to turn to a specialised platform. Both the Sparkassen (savings banks) and the Volksbanken (cooperative banks) are working on their own crypto trading services for retail customers.
Crypto via your own banking app
Bloomberg reports that Germany’s two large local banking groups are expanding their services with native crypto trading. Customers no longer need to go to external exchanges, as they will soon be able to handle everything within the app they already use daily for their banking. This significantly lowers the barrier to crypto usage, because the onboarding process is already completed for many people once they have a bank account.
The Sparkassen and Volksbanken traditionally serve households and businesses in their own regions. They are not large internationally operating investment banks, but it is precisely that regional familiarity that makes their move into crypto so striking. For many ordinary savers, a familiar bank is far more accessible than an unknown crypto platform.
Major impact on the German crypto market
The expectation is that this development will become clearly visible in the coming months. Since both banking groups together represent a massive customer base, the rollout of crypto trading can make a significant contribution to adoption in Germany. It is not a niche product for tech enthusiasts, but a service that will soon be available to a large part of the population.
Germany is thus keeping pace with a broader trend in which traditional financial institutions are taking crypto increasingly seriously. The barrier to buying crypto for the first time is getting lower and lower, and integration into existing banking apps is a logical next step. Whether this will be followed elsewhere in Europe remains to be seen, but the movement in Germany is at least a clear signal that crypto continues to find its way into the mainstream.
