The Chinese businessman Guo Wengui, also known as Miles Guo, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. A federal court in Manhattan convicted him of a massive financial fraud in which he raised over $1 billion from thousands of victims. The case has attracted global attention due to the scale of the fraud and the involvement of various crypto-related platforms. According to AP News.

Billion-dollar fraud via crypto and media companies

According to prosecutors, Guo raised enormous sums of money between 2018 and 2023 through multiple entities, including GTV Media Group, Himalaya Farm Alliance and Himalaya Exchange. Investors were lured with false promises and misleading representations. However, the money did not flow into the promised projects, but largely disappeared into Guo’s own pockets.

The fraud led to Guo’s arrest in March 2023 in New York, where he was taken into custody by the FBI. At the same time, the US government froze more than $630 million in funds across 21 different bank accounts. The indictment includes multiple forms of fraud, including bank fraud, securities fraud and money laundering.

Lavish lifestyle paid for with investor money

Prosecutors showed that Guo used the raised funds for an extravagant lifestyle. He bought luxury homes, a yacht and several sports cars, all paid for with money that actually belonged to his investors. His financier Kin Ming Je was also charged, among other things with obstruction of justice.

The case is one of the largest fraud cases in which crypto platforms played a central role. Himalaya Exchange served as one of the main channels to raise money from Guo’s followers, who trusted him online as a prominent critic of the Chinese Communist Party. The 30-year prison sentence makes clear that US judges take this kind of large-scale crypto-related fraud extremely seriously.
