Japanese Bitcoin ETF Could Reach $18.4 Billion, Analyst Says
Japan may be on the verge of a major step in the crypto world. An analyst calculates that a Japanese Bitcoin ETF could reach a size of $18.4 billion, and that is still just a fraction of what Japanese households hold in financial assets. The figures are impressive and show how great the potential of such a product is for the second largest wealth market in the world.
Bitcoin is available at OKX and Bybit.
Small market penetration, large capital
Japanese households collectively manage approximately $14.6 trillion in financial assets. A Bitcoin ETF of $18.4 billion represents just 0.13% of that, an extremely modest share. Yet that same amount would amount to about 1% of Japan’s total public equity mutual fund market, according to analyst xwinfinance via CryptoQuant.
That comparison makes clear that even a minimal shift of Japanese savings towards Bitcoin could have a huge effect on the crypto market. The country has a long tradition of conservative investing, but interest in alternative investment products is steadily growing. Japan may be working on launching a first Bitcoin ETF in 2028, indicating that the discussion about such a product is already further advanced than many realise.
Comparison with the US ETF market
The chart from CryptoQuant shows the historical growth of Bitcoin holdings in US ETFs, excluding GBTC. The fund from BlackRock, IBIT, in particular dominates the picture and accounts for the vast majority of total positions. That illustrates how quickly institutional demand can accumulate once a regulated product becomes available. BlackRock also attracts the most money for Ethereum ETFs, further clarifying the dominance of large asset managers in this segment.
Total Bitcoin holdings in the US ETF market are heading towards more than one million Bitcoin, a milestone that indicates the scale of institutional adoption. If Japan follows a similar path, the combined demand from both markets could put significant upward pressure on the Bitcoin price. At the moment, Bitcoin is trading around $65K, a decline of 1.0% over the past 24 hours.
