Lagarde Blocked Binance Access to EU, France Last Resort
ECB President Christine Lagarde is actively opposing Binance’s entry into the European market. According to sources from the French crypto media outlet The Big Whale, Lagarde is directly pushing for a blockade, which could have major consequences for the exchange’s MiCA licence application. After signals that Greece is set to reject the application, France now appears to be the only remaining option for Binance to maintain access to Europe.
Binance previously announced that it had submitted a comprehensive MiCA application to the Greek regulator HCMC. According to the company, the application was complete and met all MiCA requirements. It would then also be reviewed by ESMA.
Lagarde signals directly to Greek PM
The blockade is said to come from a high level. Lagarde is reportedly signalling directly to the Greek Prime Minister that Binance is not welcome in Europe. That message then travels via the Minister of Finance to the HCMC, the Greek stock market regulator. Although the HCMC initially declared the application compliant, political pressure seems to be decisive in the final decision.
The suspected reason behind the ECB President’s opposition relates to stablecoins. Lagarde has long been an outspoken critic of certain crypto developments, and stablecoins are a sensitive topic for the ECB due to potential risks to the monetary system. Earlier, Binance already risked losing its EU licence because of the possible rejection of its MiCA application in Greece, as reported in a previous article on this site.
France as the last straw for Binance in Europe
With Greece seemingly moving ever closer to an official rejection, Binance is turning its focus to France. That country now counts as the last realistic option for the exchange to obtain a MiCA licence and thus retain access to the European market. Whether the French regulator is also under political pressure remains unclear for now.
The situation exposes an interesting tension between mainstream European financial institutions and the crypto sector. While MiCA is intended as a clear and transparent framework for crypto companies, this case suggests that political influence outside the official process can play a major role. The stakes are high for Binance: without a valid MiCA passport, the exchange loses access to hundreds of millions of European users.
