Ethereum does not need to wait for a hard fork to prepare accounts for a post-quantum world. Nico, the lead of the Ethereum Foundation privacy project Kohaku, states that a solution is already available that costs only $0.07 per account to implement. A striking announcement that shows quantum security for Ethereum is closer than many think.

Ethereum is available at OKX and Bybit.

Quantum security without a hard fork

Nico’s proposal focuses on account-level security and uses so-called SPHINCS-min signatures, a stateless post-quantum signature method that works within the existing Ethereum environment. The major advantage is that users do not have to wait for a major network upgrade to protect their account against future quantum computers.

The costs are strikingly low: protection can be rolled out for only $0.07 per account. This makes the adoption threshold virtually zero. Nico publishes his findings on the Ethereum research forum, where the proposal is now available to the wider developer community.

Audits and verification underway

The design has already undergone an initial review via Fable, and further audits are planned. Nico indicates that he has also included a formal proof via Verity in his technical publication, which adds extra weight to the proposal’s robustness. It is a step that aligns with the broader discussion within the Ethereum community on how the network can remain future-proof.

The Ethereum price currently stands at $1.676,24. an increase of 0.1% in the past 24 hours. Whether this news has an impact on the price in the short term remains to be seen, but for the long-term development of the network, quantum security is a topic that is receiving increasing attention within the Ethereum news world.
