Memecoins win August but are already giving up the lead
Memecoins were the best-performing crypto sector in August, but quickly gave back a large part of their gains during a consolidation phase. That is the conclusion of analyst Daan of the DaanCrypto account, based on a sector overview for the month of August. Apart from gaming, virtually all other sectors performed similarly. According to the analyst, coins that generate revenue, such as Hyperliquid, would remain the most attractive for investors in the longer term.
In brief:
- Memecoins were the best-performing sector in August, but largely lost their lead
- Gaming was the only sector that lagged behind the rest
- DaanCrypto expects revenue-generating projects to perform best as a group
Memecoins rose the most, but consolidated quickly
The sector comparison for August shows that memecoins peaked at nearly 40% around 21 August, while sectors such as DeFi, L1, L2 and AI were at around 25% to 35% at that time. After that, returns moved closer together.
According to DaanCrypto, this is a pattern that occurs more often. Memecoins are the most shorted during downward trends, which is why they shoot up the hardest during a recovery. That extra pressure causes a sharp initial rise, but also a faster decline once the market stabilises briefly.
Gaming lags behind, revenue projects stand out
As the only sector, gaming ended August at around 0%, while virtually all other sectors were still clearly in positive territory. The remaining sectors, including DeFi, L1, L2, AI and memecoins, all ended August with returns of roughly 20% to 25%.
DaanCrypto says he expects that a separate group of coins that actually generate revenue, such as Hyperliquid and Pump.fun, would outperform the rest if measured as a sector. Hyperliquid is currently at $81.16, a decline of 2.7% in the past 24 hours. According to the analyst, investors continue to find these projects attractive for several reasons, and that has been the case throughout the past year.
