Michael Saylor warns of internal threat to Bitcoin

Michael Saylor, founder of Strategy, is sounding the alarm about what he sees as the biggest threat to Bitcoin. Not an external enemy, but internal factions that want to alter the fundamental rules of the network. Saylor compares Bitcoin’s consensus rules to a constitution and calls for them to be defended at all costs.

Bitcoin is available at OKX and Bybit.

Bitcoin has won, but now must survive

According to Saylor, Bitcoin is at a crossroads. The network has proven itself as a global capital foundation, but that victory brings new risks. He argues that the real threat comes from groups pushing through protocol changes for their own gain, gradually turning freedom into permission and law into plunder.

Saylor sees enormous growth potential for Bitcoin. The network, he says, could become a hundred times larger and evolve into the foundation of the global capital system. One corrupt rule change today could, however, rob future generations of markets that do not yet exist, technologies that have not yet been conceived, and economic freedom that has not yet been fought for.

Specific proposals Saylor rejects

Saylor names a number of specific proposals that he deems dangerous. For example, BIP-110 would censor valid transactions that pay a fee. Other initiatives add covenant mechanisms to the protocol, and still others want larger blocks. Although the instruments differ, the core, according to Saylor, is always the same: a faction rewrites the rules and imposes its agenda, costs and risks on everyone.

Another point Saylor raises is the role of miners in securing the network. Miners commit capital to secure Bitcoin, but their block reward halves every 210,000 blocks. This means that transaction fees must increasingly bear the burden of security. Weakening that fee market is, according to Saylor, not protection but disarmament at the very moment the network needs its defenders most. Read more about how miners work on the mining news page.

His call: simplicity, neutrality and conservatism

Saylor’s message is clear: keep the base layer of Bitcoin simple, neutral, scarce and secure. Innovation, he believes, should take place at the edges of the ecosystem, where adoption is voluntary and failure remains local. Protocol changes should only be made when truly necessary, and even then in a conservative manner.

Saylor’s remarks come at a time when the Bitcoin price is around $64K, an increase of 1.6% over the past 24 hours. Earlier it was announced that Strategy sold shares worth $5,445 billion, but did not purchase any new Bitcoin. With his recent statements, Saylor shows that he sees Bitcoin’s future primarily as a matter of protocol integrity, not price movement.
