More than 60 crypto projects halted in 2026, top three are a16z companies
This year, the crypto world has been suffering for some time under a wave of project closures. According to data from RootData, more than 60 crypto projects have now announced their shutdown, and that number continues to grow. Notable detail: the three projects with the highest funding raised are all backed by investment giant Andreessen Horowitz, also known as a16z.
Dozens of projects shut their doors
RootData maintains a running list of blockchain and crypto projects that ceased operations in 2026, filed for bankruptcy, or whose website went offline for an extended period. At present, the list counts 62 projects, created on 20 March and last updated on 22 May 2026.
Of all those stopped projects, 10 had previously raised more than $10 million from investors. That makes the closures all the more painful, because these are not small experiments but seriously funded ventures that still did not make it.
Three a16z-backed projects with the most damage
The three projects with the highest total funding are all led by Andreessen Horowitz. Yupp tops the list with $33 million in raised capital, followed by Syndicate with $27.8 million and Entropy with $26.95 million. All three fall into the infrastructure category and are thus focused on the technical layer of the crypto ecosystem.
Also Everclear, active in cross-chain communication and interoperability, appears on the list with $26.7 million in funding. That company was backed by Polychain Capital. Colony, an incubator project supported by the Avalanche Foundation, raised $19.5 million before shutting its doors. The closures show that even hefty investments are no guarantee of success in the crypto sector.
