Nearly 1 million investors lose $3.81 billion on Trump memecoin
Nearly a million retail investors who bought the TRUMP memecoin are sitting on huge losses. That is according to a report from crypto analysis firm Nansen, cited by The New York Times. Roughly two out of three buyers are in the red, and the combined losses amount to $3.81 billion. At the same time, Donald Trump himself is recording a financial disclosure of hundreds of millions of dollars in profit from his crypto ventures.
Coin drops 97% from its peak
The TRUMP memecoin is currently trading at around $1.76, a dramatic drop of 97% from the peak of $75.35. Of the nearly 988,905 buyers tracked by Nansen, the majority are ordinary retail investors who entered at the wrong time. They bear the lion’s share of the total losses.
A small group of experienced early traders did manage to make a profit. According to the report, they collectively pocketed about $4 billion, while the large mass of retail investors foot the bill. The contrast is therefore particularly stark: the profit flows to a handful of players, while the pain is widely distributed.
Trump himself pockets hundreds of millions
While most buyers are suffering losses, Trump’s own financial position paints a very different picture. His annual financial disclosure for 2025 shows that he pockets $636 million from his crypto ventures. Earlier we wrote about how Trump earns billions with Bitcoin during a market crash. His total crypto revenue in 2025 amounts to $799 million through his startup World Liberty Financial, as part of a broader profit pool of at least $2.2 billion from all his business activities that year.
The figures once again sharpen the debate over conflicts of interest. Trump launched the coin early in 2025 and is profiting enormously financially, while the vast majority of ordinary buyers are now sitting with heavy losses. The Nansen report thus exposes a painful pattern that is characteristic of many memecoin hypes: the timing and access of insiders largely determine who ultimately benefits.
