The Norwegian state investment fund posted a record profit in the first half of 2026 of around 160 billion euros. The return came to 9.4%, driven mainly by technology stocks. The fund now manages more than 2,300 billion euros in assets, making it the largest individual investor in the world.

The strong results are largely due to solid gains in the stock market. Technology companies from Asia in particular generated substantial profits. CEO Nicolai Tangen points to the strong returns as the driving force behind the record profit.

Enormous tech stock portfolio

The Norwegian fund holds significant stakes in major US technology stocks. The portfolio includes, among others, approximately $62 billion in Nvidia, $52 billion in Apple, $50 billion in Alphabet, $35 billion in Microsoft and $34 billion in TSMC. This concentration in technology reflects the focus on fast-growing sectors.

On Tuesday, the fund announced that it had acquired a 0.05 percent stake in SpaceX as of 30 June, worth over 1 billion euros. This marks the first time the fund has publicly disclosed a stake in Elon Musk’s space company.

Global diversification of investments

With an average share of 1.5 percent in all listed companies worldwide, the Norwegian fund represents an immense investment apparatus. In total, 72.1 percent of the fund is invested in equities, which shows how aggressive the strategy is.

Particularly notable is that more than half of the fund’s current value consists of accumulated investment returns. This illustrates how the Norwegian approach differs from that of many other countries: natural wealth from oil and gas production is not only used for current spending, but capital is deployed to benefit future generations as well. With 5.6 million inhabitants, Norway has a state fund twice the size of the entire Dutch economy.
