The number of active investors in the crypto market has fallen to a six-year low. According to data from CryptoRank.io, the market had only 651 unique investors in the second quarter of 2026, a sharp decline from the record of 2,564 investors set in 2022. Only in 2020 was participation lower, with quarterly figures between 250 and 450 investors.

From record high to six-year low

The chart shows a clear pattern. Between 2020 and early 2022, the number of unique investors grew strongly, reaching a peak of 2,564 in Q2 2022. Then a downward trend set in which, with some fluctuations, continues to this day. In 2024, the number still stabilised somewhat around 1,200 to 1,300 per quarter, but in 2025 and 2026 the decline continued.

It is striking that this happens at a time when DeFi TVL is also declining every month in 2026 and is currently 39% lower than at the start of this year. The broader crypto market is thus showing signs of cooling on several fronts. Also, crypto fees have fallen by an average of 44.6% in the first half of 2026, indicating less activity on the networks.

Venture capital concentrates on a select group

CryptoRank states that the trend indicates that venture capital in crypto is becoming increasingly concentrated among a smaller group of specialised investors. Broad market participation remains far below the levels seen in previous cycles. This is an important signal for anyone looking to invest in crypto: the inflow of new capital through venture capital is visibly slowing down.

Whether this is a temporary correction or a structural shift remains unclear. What is clear is that the euphoria of 2021 and 2022, when hundreds of investors entered each quarter, is far away for now. The question is whether a new bull cycle will attract enough fresh capital to push the number of active investors back towards record levels, or whether the market will become permanently smaller and more selective.
