Despite a relatively high Bitcoin price, the number of cryptocurrencies with a market value above $1 billion has fallen sharply. In August 2026, the market counts only 52 such coins, while at the peak there were more than double that number. This is according to data from CryptoRank.

In short:

  • The record stands at 107 coins with a market value above $1 billion, reached in November 2021.
  • In March 2024, 103 coins came close to that record, but a decline set in afterwards.
  • The market currently counts 52 such coins, while Bitcoin itself is still trading around $70.000.

Peak in 2021 and second wave in 2024

In November 2021, the crypto market reaches a historic high as 107 coins simultaneously have a market value of at least $1 billion. That period coincides with a broad bull market and high Bitcoin prices. After that peak, the number quickly declines, partly due to the market crash of 2022.

In 2024, a second wave follows. Around March of that year, 103 coins are in the so-called billion club, driven by renewed interest in crypto and the launch of Bitcoin ETFs. But that revival is also short-lived. After the first quarter of 2024, the number declines steadily again, as the chart from CryptoRank shows.

Fewer coins, despite higher Bitcoin price

What stands out in the chart is the divergence between the Bitcoin price and the number of coins with a billion-dollar valuation. While Bitcoin heads towards $140.000 in 2025 and then falls back to around $70.000, the number of altcoins with a high market value no longer runs parallel. Previously, the two lines seemed much more closely linked.

This indicates that the overall market value is increasingly concentrated among a smaller number of coins. Many altcoins therefore lag behind, even when Bitcoin itself performs strongly. Whether a new rise towards the levels of 2021 and 2024 is coming remains unclear for now.
