Oasis founder Dawn Song joins Meta for AI safety

Computer Science professor Dawn Song leaves the blockchain world and moves to Meta Superintelligence Labs. The UC Berkeley professor and founder of Oasis Labs will work there as Vice President of AI Research, focusing on artificial intelligence safety and security. Several core members of her team at Virtue AI are also moving to the technology company.

Song sees this step as a logical continuation of her career. She aims to deploy artificial intelligence safely, reliably, and beneficially for the world. That belief drove her research for years and ultimately led to the founding of Virtue AI in 2024, where the team focused on building a trust layer for AI systems.

From blockchain to artificial intelligence

Before Song joined Meta, she founded Oasis Labs and the eponymous privacy-preserving blockchain. This venture raised $45 million from investors, including a16z Crypto, Accel, Binance Labs, Pantera and Polychain. The ROSE token, which is linked to this blockchain, did not perform as desired.

ROSE is currently trading around $0,006. representing a decline of approximately 99% from its all-time high of $0.596. This dramatic price drop illustrates the challenges many blockchain projects face in the current market climate.

Virtue AI and the move to Meta

At Virtue AI, Song and her team made significant progress. The company developed technologies for AI security, partnered with leading enterprises and AI labs, and contributed research and open platforms to advance trustworthy artificial intelligence. Song sees her new role at Meta as an opportunity to carry out this mission on a larger scale.

Song stresses that future AI systems must become safer and more reliable as they grow more autonomous and capable. She sees Meta’s vision to build AI and AI agents that benefit billions of people, and considers this one of the greatest challenges of our time.
