Demand for Bitcoin from smaller investors is rising to its highest level in two years. On 19 August, a new demand record for 2026 was set with 10,883 BTC, while the Bitcoin price only recovered modestly to $64.200. Analyst Darkfost sees a striking signal in that combination: retail investors are reacting increasingly quickly to the smallest price movements, which points to impatience within this group.

Bitcoin is available at OKX and Bybit.

In brief:

  • Retail demand for Bitcoin is approaching the highest level of the past two years.
  • A new demand record for 2026 has been set with 10,883 BTC, despite a weak price recovery.
  • Total demand via spot and futures is slowly improving after a long period of decline.

Retail investors increasingly active at the slightest price movement

Based on on-chain data from CryptoQuant, analyst Darkfost signals a clear increase in the activity of smaller investors, defined as transactions from $0 to $10.000. Demand from this group is currently approaching the highest level of the past two years.

What is striking is that this is happening while Bitcoin has not yet recovered strongly. The price stands at $64.233, just 0.1% higher than 24 hours earlier. Darkfost sees this as a sign that retail investors are becoming impatient and are entering at the slightest price movement, rather than waiting for a clearer uptrend. Historically, peaks in retail demand coincide with local price tops for Bitcoin.

New demand record for 2026, but the recovery remains fragile

With 10,883 BTC, total daily demand growth has reached its highest point of this year. Darkfost acknowledges that this is modest in absolute terms, but points out that it is the first clear improvement after a long period of declining demand.

The chart of spot and perpetual futures demand shows that total demand was strongly negative for most of 2026, with outliers towards minus 240,000 BTC per month around June. The recent improvement brings that indicator back towards zero, but whether that level can be maintained is still uncertain according to Darkfost. The analyst reckons that demand could quickly fall back into negative territory.
