Russian banking giant Sberbank wants to start offering loans in which customers can use Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tether as collateral. That is according to Anatoly Popov, deputy chairman of the board of directors, in an interview with the Russian news agency TASS. The plans depend on approval from the Russian central bank, which must first allow Ethereum and Tether for public circulation before the bank can use them.

In short:

  • Sberbank wants to offer loans with Bitcoin, Ethereum and Tether as collateral.
  • The expansion will only take effect once Russian regulation is fully in force.
  • Deputy Chairman Popov says the bank already has practical experience with crypto.

Popov: bank already has experience with crypto

Popov made the announcement ahead of the Eastern Economic Forum. According to him, Sberbank is already prepared for the arrival of new regulation. “We already have practical experience with crypto. As soon as the law is fully in force, we will adapt our existing products to the new requirements and gradually expand the offering,” Popov told TASS.

The bank wants to further develop loans secured by digital assets. Bitcoin could already be used as collateral previously, but Sberbank wants to expand this to Ethereum and the stablecoin Tether. Exactly when that will be possible depends on when the Russian central bank gives the green light for the public circulation of those coins.

Expansion awaits Russian regulation

Russia has been working on a legal framework for digital assets for some time. Sberbank says it wants to expand its product line immediately once all parts of the new regulation come into force. This concerns not only loans, but also a broader adaptation of existing financial products to the new crypto legislation.

The step fits into a broader trend in which large financial institutions are integrating crypto into their range of services. Bitcoin is increasingly growing into a serious financial instrument, also outside the traditional crypto world. At the time of writing, Bitcoin is at $78K, up 0.7% in the past 24 hours.
