Billionaire investor Tim Draper has stated emphatically that his Bitcoin holdings are safer than cash in a bank account. In a conversation with Benzinga, Draper said that quantum computers will crack banks much faster than they can attack the blockchain. He points out that the outdated infrastructure of financial institutions is much more vulnerable than many people think.

Bitcoin is available at OKX and Bybit.

Quantum computers pose greater risk to banks

Draper emphasises that everyone is worried about quantum computing breaking Bitcoin’s encryption, while banks run on outdated systems that actually make Bitcoin look very safe. The infrastructure of traditional financial institutions is much more exposed to such attacks than the decentralised network of Bitcoin. According to Draper, this difference in technology and security is crucial.

The Bitcoin price is currently around $61K, with a decline of 2.7% in the past 24 hours. Despite these short-term movements, many prominent figures like Draper continue to believe in the fundamental long-term security of the network.

The network can recover from quantum attacks

An important point Draper makes is that even if Bitcoin were hit by a quantum attack, the network’s full node operators could roll back to the last secure block. The network would therefore survive. Traditional banking systems simply lack this self-healing capability. If something happened to the financial infrastructure, customers would have no way to return to a safe state.

According to Draper, Bitcoin will eventually completely replace the dollar when retailers start accepting Bitcoin. The moment trading enterprises realise they only want to accept Bitcoin, something fundamental happens to the monetary structure. This is an outspoken vision, but one that fits Draper’s long-term view on cryptocurrency.

Casa’s chief security officer Jameson Lopp previously stated that Bitcoin’s transition to quantum-resistant cryptography could take about a decade. Banks might be able to adapt more quickly to quantum threats. This does add some nuance to Draper’s absolute statements, although the core idea remains that traditional financial systems are currently more vulnerable.
