Hardware wallet manufacturer Trezor reports a data breach at an external shipping partner that has exposed the personal data of thousands of customers. Binance founder CZ points to the risks this poses for crypto holders.

In short:

  • A data breach at Trezor’s shipping partner affects approximately 13,700 customers, of whom nearly 11,700 had their personal data exposed.
  • Trezor’s own systems and private keys are not affected.
  • CZ says the incident exposes the differences in risk between hardware wallets and software wallets.

Earlier, thelatestcryptonews.com wrote about how Trezor warned about the data breach at the shipping partner.

What exactly was exposed

The leak is not at Trezor itself, but at the company that handles the shipping of hardware wallets. Of the more than 13,700 affected customers, nearly 11,700 people had their full name, email address, phone number and home address exposed. Trezor says its own systems and private keys have remained unaffected.

Nevertheless, the situation is concerning, because the leaked data directly links names and addresses to people who own crypto. This makes the group an attractive target for phishing, social engineering and, in the worst case, physical threats.

CZ on the risk profiles of hardware and software wallets

Binance founder CZ responds to the incident and notes that hardware wallets are safer than software wallets in certain respects, but that this leak brings to light an advantage of software self-custody wallets. With a software solution, there is no physical product that is purchased and shipped, so no link is created between a person’s identity, address and ownership of crypto.

CZ explicitly says he does not label hardware wallets as bad, but that they simply have a different risk profile. He also indicates that his investment arm YZiLabs invests in several hardware wallet companies. According to him, it ultimately comes down to awareness: the better the crypto community understands which risks come with which choice, the better everyone is protected.
