Two Ethereum Metrics Plunge Below Zero Simultaneously: What Does That Mean?

Two long-term on-chain metrics of Ethereum are simultaneously in negative territory. Historically, this is a rare situation that has coincided with periods of accumulation and low valuations. The Ethereum price currently stands at $1.850, down 1.2% over the past 24 hours.

Ethereum is available at OKX and Bybit.

At a glance:

  • Ethereum’s MVRV Z-score stands at -0.14, indicating a compressed valuation relative to the realised value.
  • The Delta Growth Rate stands at -0.07, indicating that on-chain value accumulation is outpacing speculative price increases.
  • Both metrics are negative at the same time, something which historically coincides more often with accumulation phases than with market euphoria.

What exactly do the two metrics say?

The MVRV Z-score measures how Ethereum’s market value relates to its realised value, in other words the price at which coins last moved. A score of -0.14 means that ETH is currently trading well below that realised value. Negative values for this metric have historically occurred mainly during periods of heavy market pressure, such as the bottoms of 2018 and 2022.

The Delta Growth Rate compares the growth of market capitalisation with that of realised capitalisation over a 365-day period. A negative value of -0.07 indicates that realised capitalisation is growing faster than market value. Put simply: coins are changing hands at higher prices than the current market rate, which points to active accumulation by long-term investors.

Historical pattern, but no guarantee

Analyst joao_wedson points out that the simultaneous negativity of both metrics has historically occurred almost exclusively in phases of undervalued markets, and not during euphoric periods. Alphractal’s charts show that similar circumstances emerged around 2019 and 2022, each time preceding a recovery move.

Yet there is a clear caveat: this does not automatically mean that Ethereum has already reached its definitive bottom. Market sentiment is still negative at the moment. What the metrics do show is that Ethereum’s valuation structure is becoming increasingly attractive for those with a longer time horizon. Meanwhile, major players remain active; for instance, Bitmine already holds $58 million worth of Ethereum and the company stakes 87% of its holdings, while Vitalik Buterin recently adjusted Ethereum’s roadmap with more focus on privacy and quantum security.
