UK sanctions against HTX cause compliance chaos
The United Kingdom’s recent sanctions against the crypto exchange HTX raise questions about the effectiveness of regulation in the crypto world. According to crypto researcher zachxbt, these measures are an overreaction that does more harm than good. The British approach appears to lack all nuance and creates a problem that compliance tools can no longer handle.
The Problem with Address Tainting
zachxbt explains that the tainting of HTX addresses on the blockchain has been catastrophic for research and compliance capabilities. Historically, the United Kingdom targeted companies with demonstrated high levels of illegal activity, such as Huione, Blender and Hydra. This was a grounded approach.
The case of HTX is fundamentally different. The exchange serves a considerable community of Asian retail users and does not have the same track record as those former targets. By sanctioning HTX, the distinction between what is actually risky and what is not has become meaningless. This makes the work of researchers increasingly difficult, as they now have to disregard entire categories in their analyses.
Compliance Tools Fail
Another problem zachxbt points out is that current compliance tools do not properly differentiate between activity before and after sanctions. This lack of precision makes it impossible to obtain a nuanced picture of risk. Meanwhile, zachxbt has uncovered a legitimate money laundering case worth $1.25 billion, but the United Kingdom completely misses this case.
This pattern is not new. The United Kingdom has historically struggled with crypto investigations. To insiders, the sanctions against HTX feel more like a political move than a reasoned regulation based on actual evidence. While real violations are ignored by regulators, policymakers focus on easy targets. This kind of approach undermines trust in regulation and only makes the crypto market more opaque.
Earlier, zachxbt also reported problems with other exchanges, indicating that the researcher remains constantly alert to risks in the sector. However, the current sanctions against HTX seem mainly symptomatic of a system that is no longer functioning properly.
