Whales send more Bitcoin to Binance at a four-month high
While the Bitcoin price has been fluctuating between $60.000 and $65.000 for some time, a striking indicator on Binance is showing a sharp spike. The ratio of large Bitcoin inflows from whales on the platform is rising to its highest level in four months. This points to increasing activity from large players, which historically occurs at both market tops and bottoms.
Bitcoin is available at OKX and Bybit.
In brief:
- The whale inflow ratio on Binance rises to 0.52, the highest level in four months.
- Whales are sending more Bitcoin to Binance than smaller players, which increases selling pressure.
- Due to the low volatility, analyst Darkfost expects the indicator to quickly return to normal.
Whale inflow ratio reaches notable level
Analyst Darkfost highlights a notable development on Binance. The whale inflow ratio, a metric indicating which share of the total Bitcoin inflow on the platform comes from large players relative to smaller transactions, now stands at 0.52. That is the highest level in the past four months.
This means whales are sending relatively more Bitcoin to Binance than other participants. Exchanges such as Binance are often used for selling, so a higher inflow from large players mechanically increases the selling pressure on Bitcoin. Bitcoin has been experiencing elevated selling pressure for some time, and this move fits into that broader picture.
Historical pattern: top or bottom?
Historical data shows that peaks in the whale inflow ratio are not clear-cut. They occur just as often at market tops as at bottoms, often during periods of panic or capitulation. It is therefore difficult to conclude based on this signal alone whether the market is at a turning point.
The Bitcoin price has been trading around $64.000 for some time with few outliers. Darkfost says the low volatility is an important factor at the moment. He expects the whale inflow ratio to quickly fall back to a more normal level once this episode is over, provided the elevated inflow does not persist. At the time of writing, Bitcoin trades at $64.100, an increase of 1.0% in the past 24 hours.
