What is Aave?

Aave is one of the largest decentralised lending protocols in crypto. It lets people lend out their assets to earn interest or borrow against them, all without a bank in the middle. It started in 2017 as ETHLend, a peer-to-peer lender, and rebranded to Aave, Finnish for “ghost”, in 2018, switching to a pooled model that made lending instant. Its token, AAVE, is used for governance and gives holders fee benefits and a role in securing the protocol.

Aave is best known for popularising flash loans, uncollateralised loans that must be borrowed and repaid within a single transaction, and for launching its own stablecoin, GHO.

From ETHLend to DeFi blue chip

  • 2017: the project raises funds as ETHLend, with its token selling for a few cents.
  • 2018 to 2020: a rebrand to Aave and a move to pooled lending, and in 2020 it becomes one of the first protocols to pass 1 billion dollars locked during the DeFi summer.
  • May 2021: AAVE reaches a peak near 660 dollars.
  • 2021 to 2023: a long decline with the wider DeFi market, even as the protocol keeps shipping new versions.
  • 2024 to 2025: a recovery as lending activity grows and Aave rolls out its GHO stablecoin and a token buyback programme.

AAVE tends to rise and fall with the health of DeFi lending as a whole.

What moves the Aave price?

The value of AAVE reflects supply and demand, with activity on the protocol carrying particular weight. The main drivers:

Why the value climbs

  • Rising deposits and borrowing across the protocol.
  • New versions, chains or products such as the GHO stablecoin.
  • A buyback programme that reduces the circulating supply.
  • A strong DeFi market and risk-on sentiment.

Why the value drops

  • A slowdown in DeFi activity and lending demand.
  • A security exploit in the protocol or a major rival.
  • Market-wide downturns or a global crisis.
  • A buy the rumour, sell the news reaction.

These are not the only factors, but they cover most of the moves. For broader context, follow our latest Ethereum news and our altcoin news.
