What is Bitcoin Cash?
Bitcoin Cash was created on 1 August 2017 in one of crypto’s most famous splits, a hard fork from Bitcoin. Its supporters wanted larger blocks so the chain could handle more transactions and work better as everyday digital cash, staying close to the original peer-to-peer electronic cash idea. Everyone holding Bitcoin at the time received an equal amount of BCH.
Like Bitcoin, BCH is capped at 21 million coins and secured by proof-of-work, but its bigger blocks let it process far more transactions per block at lower fees.

A fork and its aftermath
- December 2017: riding the bull market and a “real Bitcoin” narrative, BCH hits an all-time high around 4,355 dollars.
- 2018: a second hard fork splits off Bitcoin SV after a protocol dispute, denting confidence, and BCH slides hard in the bear market.
- 2020 and 2024: BCH runs its own halvings, cutting the block reward on a Bitcoin-like schedule.
- 2021: a partial recovery to roughly 1,600 dollars, still well short of its record.
- since: a broad trading range as it competes with faster and cheaper rivals.
BCH is a case study in how community splits can shape a coin’s brand, and its price, for years afterward.
What moves the Bitcoin Cash price?
The value of BCH reflects supply and demand, with adoption as a payments coin and its link to Bitcoin both mattering. The main drivers:
Why the value climbs
- Growing merchant and payment adoption.
- A strong Bitcoin market, which BCH often follows.
- Anticipation around its halving.
- Positive crypto news and risk-on sentiment.
Why the value drops
- Being overshadowed by Bitcoin or newer payment coins.
- Renewed debate or division within the community.
- Market-wide downturns or a global crisis.
- A buy the rumour, sell the news reaction.
These are far from the only factors, but they explain most of the swings. For the reporting behind them, follow our latest Bitcoin Cash news and our Bitcoin news.
