What is Bittensor?
Bittensor is a decentralised network for artificial intelligence. Instead of relying on a single tech company, it lets people around the world contribute AI models, data and computing power, and rewards them in its token, TAO, based on the value they add. The network is organised into specialised subnets that compete to produce useful machine intelligence, scored by a system called Yuma Consensus. Like Bitcoin, TAO is capped at 21 million coins and follows a halving schedule.
Launched in 2021 by the Opentensor Foundation, Bittensor sits at the crossroads of two of crypto’s biggest themes: artificial intelligence and scarce, sound-money tokenomics.

Riding the AI narrative
- 2021 to 2023: TAO trades quietly, mostly below 100 dollars, while the network is built out.
- late 2023: the launch of subnets and surging interest in AI drive a sharp rally.
- April 2024: TAO reaches its all-time high around 760 dollars, at the height of the AI hype.
- 2024 to 2025: a sharp correction and recovery attempts, with a first halving in late 2025 cutting the rate of new supply.
- 2026: a broad market selloff pulls TAO back toward the 250 to 300 dollar range.
TAO’s price has tracked the wider excitement around AI more closely than almost any other token.
What moves the Bittensor price?
The value of TAO reflects supply and demand, with the AI narrative and its Bitcoin-like scarcity both playing a part. The main drivers:
Why the value climbs
- Momentum behind the decentralised AI narrative.
- Growth in subnets and real usage of the network.
- Halvings that cut the rate of new supply.
- A strong crypto market and risk-on sentiment.
Why the value drops
- A cooling AI narrative or rotation into other themes.
- Competition from other AI and compute projects.
- Market-wide downturns or a global crisis.
- A buy the rumour, sell the news reaction.
These are not the only factors, but they cover most of the moves. For more, follow our AI news and our broader altcoin news.
