What is Cosmos?

Cosmos is a project often called the “Internet of Blockchains.” Rather than being one chain that does everything, it is a toolkit that lets developers build their own application-specific blockchains, or “zones,” and connect them so they can pass tokens and data to one another. Its token, ATOM, secures the central Cosmos Hub through staking and is used for governance.

The technology rests on three pieces: the Cosmos SDK for building chains, the CometBFT consensus engine, formerly known as Tendermint, and the Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol, or IBC, which links the chains together.

Following the live Cosmos price

On this page you will find the live Cosmos price in both US dollars and euros, with the context you need to read the market. The chart shows the last 7 days by default, and you can switch the view to 24 hours, 7 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or a full year. Tap a button and it redraws straight away.

That makes it simple to weigh recent action against the bigger picture before drawing conclusions.

Market data at a glance

Together with the live rate, the page collects:

  • The day’s high and low.
  • Market capitalisation in dollars (B for billion, M for million).
  • Combined trading volume across the major exchanges.
  • The amount of ATOM in circulation.
  • The all-time high, when it was reached and how far below it the price sits now.
  • Where you can buy ATOM.
  • Links to the official website, whitepaper and social channels.

Convert ATOM and see the real cost

The calculator instantly converts any amount of ATOM into dollars or euros, and back again. Beside it sits an exchange fee calculator, so you can see what a trade actually costs once fees are counted and roughly how much ATOM you would receive, rather than just the quoted figure.

Historical Cosmos data

Under historical data you can revisit past prices on any date, shown in dollars as the market standard, with the matching trading volume and market cap.

Cosmos’s price story

  • 2017: an ICO sells ATOM for around 0.10 dollars, and the Cosmos Hub goes live in March 2019.
  • March 2020: the COVID crash drives ATOM to a low near 1.13 dollars.
  • September 2021: with the ecosystem growing and IBC live, ATOM reaches its all-time high around 44 dollars.
  • since: a long decline, weighed down by a debate over how much value the ATOM token actually captures from the wider ecosystem.

Cosmos’s technology is widely used, but turning that into demand for ATOM has been its central challenge.

What moves the Cosmos price?

The value of ATOM reflects supply and demand, with ecosystem growth and the token’s role within it both playing a part. The main drivers:

Why the value climbs

  • Growth in the number of chains and activity across the ecosystem.
  • Upgrades to IBC and shared interchain security.
  • Rising staking participation locking up ATOM.
  • A strong crypto market and risk-on sentiment.

Why the value drops

  • The long-running debate over how much value ATOM captures.
  • Competition from other interoperability projects.
  • An inflationary supply adding new tokens.
  • Market-wide downturns or a global crisis.

These are not the only factors, but they cover most of the moves. For broader market context, follow our latest altcoin news.
