What is Filecoin?
Filecoin is a decentralised storage network: a global marketplace where anyone with spare hard-drive space can rent it out, and anyone who needs to store data can pay for it. It is built by Protocol Labs, the team behind the widely used IPFS file-sharing protocol, and was founded by Juan Benet. Its token, FIL, is what clients pay, and what storage providers earn and post as collateral.
To keep providers honest, the network uses cryptographic proofs, Proof-of-Replication and Proof-of-Spacetime, that show data is really being held over time. The goal is a cheaper, censorship-resistant alternative to the big cloud providers.

From record ICO to long grind
- 2017: Filecoin raises around 205 million dollars in one of the largest token sales of its era.
- October 2020: after years of building, the mainnet launches; FIL spikes and then settles.
- April 2021: FIL reaches its all-time high around 237 dollars in the bull market.
- since: a long decline, as steady token unlocks add new supply that demand has had to absorb.
- 2026: renewed interest in decentralised infrastructure, often grouped under the DePIN label, brings fresh attention.
Filecoin’s challenge has been turning real storage usage into lasting demand for the token.
What moves the Filecoin price?
The value of FIL reflects supply and demand, with network usage and a large unlock schedule both playing a part. The main drivers:
Why the value climbs
- Growth in real storage deals and network usage.
- Momentum behind the DePIN and decentralised-infrastructure narrative.
- Lighter unlock pressure as more of the supply is already circulating.
- A strong crypto market and risk-on sentiment.
Why the value drops
- Large scheduled token unlocks adding fresh supply.
- Competition from other storage and cloud providers.
- Market-wide downturns or a global crisis.
- A buy the rumour, sell the news reaction.
