What is NEAR Protocol?

NEAR Protocol is a fast, low-cost layer-1 blockchain built to be easy for both developers and everyday users. It uses a sharding design, branded Nightshade, that splits the network into parts so it can scale as demand grows. Its token, NEAR, pays fees, secures the network through staking and is used for governance.

NEAR launched its mainnet in 2020. One of its co-founders, Illia Polosukhin, helped write the original research behind modern AI models, which is part of why the project has leaned into the crossover between crypto and artificial intelligence.
