What is Uniswap?
Uniswap is the largest decentralised exchange, or DEX, letting people swap tokens straight from their own wallets without a middleman. It pioneered the automated market maker model, where pools of tokens and an algorithm set prices instead of a traditional order book. Its token, UNI, is a governance token: holders help steer the protocol through the Uniswap DAO.
The protocol launched in 2018, created by developer Hayden Adams, and the UNI token followed in September 2020 through a widely publicised airdrop to past users of the platform.

Uniswap’s price story
- September 2020: UNI launches via airdrop and trades around a few dollars.
- May 2021: UNI reaches its all-time high near 45 dollars, around the launch of its V3 upgrade.
- 2022: it falls through the bear market alongside the wider DeFi sector.
- 2023 to 2025: a broad range, with moves often driven by debate over whether the protocol should turn on fees for UNI holders.
As the leading DEX token, UNI tends to rise and fall with the health of decentralised finance as a whole.
What moves the Uniswap price?
The value of UNI reflects supply and demand, with trading activity on the protocol and its governance decisions both mattering. The main drivers:
Why the value climbs
- Rising trading volume and activity on the exchange.
- Progress on the long-debated fee switch for UNI holders.
- New versions, chains or products from Uniswap Labs.
- A strong DeFi market and risk-on sentiment.
Why the value drops
- A slowdown in DeFi activity and trading volume.
- Competition from rival decentralised exchanges.
- Market-wide downturns or a global crisis.
- A buy the rumour, sell the news reaction.
These are far from the only factors, but they explain most of the swings. For broader context, follow our latest altcoin news and our Ethereum news.
