What is Zcash?
Zcash is a privacy coin built on a modified version of Bitcoin’s code. It launched in 2016 from the Electric Coin Company, led by Zooko Wilcox-O’Hearn, and was the first to deploy zk-SNARKs, cryptography that can prove a transaction is valid without revealing the sender, receiver or amount. Users can choose transparent addresses, which work like Bitcoin, or shielded addresses, which keep the details private. Like Bitcoin, ZEC is capped at 21 million coins.
That optional privacy is what sets Zcash apart from a coin like Monero, where privacy is always on by default.
Following the live Zcash price
On this page you will find the live Zcash price in both US dollars and euros, with the context you need to read the market. The chart opens on the last 7 days by default, and you can switch to 24 hours, 7 days, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months or a full year. Pick a period with the buttons and the chart updates on the spot.
It is a quick way to set short-term swings against the longer trend before you decide anything.
Market data at a glance
Beside the live rate, the page brings together:
- The intraday high and low.
- Market capitalisation in dollars (B for billion, M for million).
- Combined trading volume across the major exchanges.
- The amount of ZEC in circulation, out of a 21 million cap.
- The all-time high, the date it was set and how far below it the price sits now.
- Where you can buy ZEC.
- Links to the official website, whitepaper and social channels.
Convert ZEC and see the real cost
The calculator turns any amount of ZEC into dollars or euros instantly, and it works in reverse too. Alongside it sits an exchange fee calculator, so you can see what a trade really costs after fees and roughly how much ZEC you would end up with, not just the headline rate.
Historical Zcash data
Under historical data you can look back at past prices on any date, shown in dollars as the market standard, with the matching trading volume and market cap.
From launch-day spike to privacy revival
- October 2016: on launch day, a tiny initial supply and intense demand briefly push ZEC to thousands of dollars before it collapses just as fast.
- 2017: a peak around 790 dollars in the bull run, followed by years of decline.
- 2021: a recovery to roughly 370 dollars, then another long downtrend that left it written off by many.
- 2025: a dramatic comeback as privacy returns to the spotlight, with ZEC overtaking Monero as the largest privacy coin by market cap and reaching a cycle high near 750 dollars in November.
Zcash shows how quickly a long-ignored coin can roar back when its core idea comes back into fashion.
What moves the Zcash price?
Because privacy demand drives so much of the interest in ZEC, the headlines and the price are tightly linked. The main drivers:
Why the value climbs
- Rising demand for privacy and growth in shielded usage.
- Technical upgrades that strengthen privacy or security.
- Halvings that cut the rate of new supply.
- A strong crypto market and risk-on sentiment.
Why the value drops
- Regulatory pressure or delistings affecting privacy coins.
- A fading privacy narrative or cooling attention.
- Market-wide downturns or a global crisis.
- A buy the rumour, sell the news reaction.
These are not the only factors, but they cover most of the moves. For the broader picture, follow our Monero news and our regulation news.
