Almost half of all stablecoins are parked on exchanges
Almost half of all stablecoins in circulation have been sitting on crypto exchanges for months without being deployed. That is according to data from CryptoQuant. The so-called Exchange Supply Ratio for ERC20 stablecoins has been fluctuating steadily between 0.40 and 0.46 since the end of 2024, with a current value of 0.412. This large pile of dry liquidity on the sidelines has direct consequences for the Bitcoin market.
Stablecoin is available at OKX and Bybit.
Liquidity in Abundance, but Selectively Deployed
Analyst MorenoDV of CryptoQuant states in an analysis on CryptoQuant that the market is not exactly desperate for liquidity at the moment. It is plentiful. The problem is rather that investors are extremely picky about deploying their capital. Only when sufficient confidence or risk appetite emerges does that money flow into the market.
This makes the current situation on the stablecoin market unique. There is a huge potential buying power present, but it remains frozen for now. Small shifts in sentiment can therefore have large effects. Even a relatively modest inflow of capital is enough to move the market.
Bitcoin Feels Every Move
For Bitcoin, which currently stands at $65.214 with a slight decline of 0.8% over the past 24 hours, this means that volatility remains structurally high. According to MorenoDV, modest changes in investor conviction, risk appetite or capital deployment cause disproportionately large price swings. In other words, the market overreacts to relatively small triggers.
That picture fits with broader concerns about the Bitcoin price. For instance, Wintermute warns that the price could potentially fall further towards $50.000. while other analysts see opportunities towards $74.000 and $79.000. The large amount of stablecoins waiting on exchanges can have an accelerating effect in either scenario. As soon as investors collectively decide to deploy that liquidity, or conversely to pull back further, the price can move quickly. The only question is when that moment will come.
