Arthur Hayes dumps full Zcash position after critical exploit
Arthur Hayes, co-founder of BitMEX, has decided to sell his entire Zcash position. The decision to sell follows the discovery of the critical Orchard Pool exploit, which leads Hayes to question the fundamental security of the project.
Hayes indicates that while he considers it extremely unlikely that coins were actually minted via the exploit, this cannot be completely ruled out cryptographically. This uncertainty directly clashes with the core value he attributes to privacy coins: full perfection rather than mere probability.
The narrative shifts due to the decline
The approximately 30% price drop in Zcash forced Hayes to rethink his entire thesis. He states that this loss made him realise how the exploit had disrupted his mental map of the project. The combination of technical uncertainty and the market reaction eventually led him to decide to take profits on the entire position.
Hayes emphasises that privacy is priceless to him and he is fully willing to reconsider his stance. If his current assumption turns out to be invalid, he would like to re-enter, preferably at lower prices. This indicates that his sale is not definitive, but rather a precautionary measure.
Further portfolio adjustments
Meanwhile, Hayes maintains his position in World Coin and indicates he is enthusiastic about future developments around this project. This shift in focus marks a clear reorientation of his portfolio in light of recently discovered security vulnerabilities in other privacy projects.
The Orchard exploit in Zcash and Hayes’s reaction underscore how critical security issues directly affect the confidence of large investors in privacy technology. The episode also shows that Hayes is not afraid to adjust his positions when the underlying narrative is called into question.
