Crypto is having a tough time in 2026. The latest update from market maker GSR shows that Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana are suffering substantial losses this year, with Solana taking the biggest hit with a decline of more than 40%. GSR is adjusting its model portfolio to give more room to Bitcoin and less to Ethereum.

Bitcoin is available at OKX and Bybit.

In short:

  • Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana are down 24.82%, 35.49% and 40.21% respectively this year.
  • GSR’s Core3 model portfolio lost 57.78% over the past year, worse than an equally weighted basket.
  • GSR is increasing Bitcoin’s share in the portfolio and reducing its exposure to Ethereum.

Heavy losses for the three largest cryptocurrencies

Market maker GSR published the latest status of its so-called Core3 model portfolio on 5 August 2026. It shows Bitcoin down 24.82% on an annual basis and Ethereum down 35.49%. Solana is the hardest hit, with a decline of 40.21% since the start of the year. Bitcoin is currently trading around $64.800, a slight gain of 1.0% over the past 24 hours.

Over a one-year period, the losses are even higher. Bitcoin is down 47.08%, Ethereum down 44.73% and Solana down 54.89%. The fact that the crypto market is struggling is also reflected in the large proportion of Bitcoin currently trading at a loss.

Core3 portfolio performs worse than equally weighted basket

GSR’s Core3 portfolio lost 57.78% over the past year. That is a worse performance than a simple equally weighted basket of the same three coins, which gave up 49.84% over the same period. In the shorter term, the differences are smaller: over the past week, Core3 is up 0.51% versus up 0.85% for the equally weighted alternative.

The allocation in the Core3 portfolio on 5 August is as follows: Ethereum has the largest weighting at 44.1%, followed by Solana at 36.5% and Bitcoin at 19.3%. Notably, GSR has decided to increase the share of Bitcoin as trading activity and volatility decline. At the same time, the market maker is reducing its exposure to Ethereum. Whether that choice pays off depends in part on how market sentiment develops in the coming weeks.
