Bitcoin miners in heavy weather: financial health at bear market level
Bitcoin miners are currently experiencing notably severe financial difficulties. An indicator that combines multiple data points, such as issuance, block time, transaction fees and revenue, shows that miners’ financial health is at a level typically associated with the depths of a bear market. This is despite the fact that the Bitcoin price is certainly not at an all-time low.
Bitcoin is available at OKX and Bybit.
Miner Financial Health Index Fluctuates Between 10% and 30%
The Miner Financial Health Index, expressed as a 7-day moving average, is currently moving between 10% and 30%. At the time of writing, the indicator stands at approximately 28.5%. That is significantly below the so-called “overheat” zone of 80%, but also notably above the alert level of 20%. According to analyst Darkfost, these are levels normally seen at the peak of bear markets.
What makes this particularly striking is that the Bitcoin price has not been dramatically low during the recent period. Miners are therefore facing serious pressure on their revenues, even though market conditions are not explicitly negative on paper. The mining sector thus shows how heavily the combination of high mining difficulty and relatively low fees is weighing on operating margins.
What Does This Say About the Broader Market?
Historically, the financial position of miners has been a useful indicator for the broader crypto market. When miners run into trouble, they may be forced to sell their Bitcoin reserves to cover costs. This can put additional selling pressure on the market, something investors take into account.
The question is whether this situation is a temporary trough or the beginning of a longer difficult period for the sector. Darkfost says he is surprised by the severity of the situation and states that the pressure miners are currently feeling is comparable to what they endured during real bear markets. Whether the market recovers or faces further pressure will depend in part on how the Bitcoin price develops over the coming weeks and whether transaction fees rise again.
