Bitcoin options worth $10 billion expire Friday
The Bitcoin market faces a stern test on Friday. Approximately $10 billion in Bitcoin options expire on Deribit, the world’s largest crypto options platform. This adds extra pressure to a market that is already struggling to keep its head above water. The Bitcoin price currently stands at $61K, a decline of 1.5% over the past 24 hours.
Bitcoin is available at OKX and Bybit.
Bullish contracts in a declining market
The problem lies in the nature of the expiring contracts. A large portion of the options are bullish bets, placed when traders were still counting on a rise in the Bitcoin price. Now that the market is actually declining, many of those positions are underwater. This increases the likelihood that traders will shift to a more defensive or outright bearish stance.
The expiration date is Friday at 4:00 PM Singapore time. That makes this moment a kind of stress test for the ongoing downward movement, Bloomberg reports. The question is whether the market can absorb this or whether the expiry will trigger a new wave of selling pressure.
Declining institutional demand and macro headwinds
The timing is unfortunate. Bitcoin is already grappling with declining institutional interest, making the market more vulnerable to major events such as this options expiry. Earlier this week, it emerged that Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF flows were negative for four consecutive days, further illustrating the weakening demand from institutional quarters.
On top of that, the macro environment is not cooperating either. Interest rate uncertainty and geopolitical tensions weigh on risky assets, and Bitcoin is no exception. Analysts are closely monitoring the situation around the Bitcoin four-year cycle pattern to determine whether this is a temporary correction or the start of a longer downward phase. Friday’s options expiry could play a decisive role in this.
