Coinbase secures MiCA licence and expands across Europe
Coinbase, the world’s largest crypto platform based in the US, has announced that it has obtained a MiCA licence from Luxembourg’s financial regulator, the CSSF. This is a milestone for the company, as it can now offer crypto products and services in all 27 EU member states under a single, uniform regulatory framework. That covers more than 450 million people.
The US crypto firm is establishing Luxembourg as its European crypto hub. With this move, Coinbase demonstrates a serious commitment to regulation and compliance in Europe, a region where regulators are keeping an increasingly close watch on crypto activities.
MiCA creates uniform rules for Europe
The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, or MiCA for short, recently came into force in the EU. This regulation imposes strict requirements on crypto platforms and service providers. Companies must pass rigorous checks in the areas of consumer protection, anti-money laundering and financial stability. Coinbase has met these requirements and can now officially call itself a licensed entity in the European Union.
With the MiCA licence, Coinbase no longer needs to seek separate approvals in each EU country. That cuts bureaucracy and makes the company more efficient. Other major players such as Binance are still struggling with the complex regulations surrounding MiCA. Looking at the bigger picture of how crypto exchanges are dealing with MiCA, the impact can vary significantly from one company to another.
European expansion accelerates
For Coinbase, this licence marks a new chapter in Europe. The company can now invest heavily in products and services specifically tailored to European customers. It also sends a signal to other crypto firms: anyone serious about doing business in Europe must comply with the rules.
Other players in the crypto world are also watching Europe closely. Recently, there has been significant movement on the regulatory front, with countries such as India and Brazil still shaping their own crypto legislation. Coinbase proves that embracing regulation can work and can even be an advantage. Interested in the latest crypto exchange news? Follow our coverage.
