The dominance of memecoins relative to the total altcoin market value has fallen to the lowest level ever recorded. This is according to a chart from CryptoQuant shared by analyst Darkfost. The ratio, which peaked at around 0.11 in early 2025, now stands at roughly 0.026. Interest in memecoins as part of the broader altcoin market has therefore never been this low.

In brief:

  • Memecoin dominance as a share of total altcoin market value is at a historic low.
  • After peaking in early 2025, the ratio has since fallen almost continuously.
  • Analyst Darkfost wonders whether extremely low interest could ultimately spark a new memecoin season.

From peak to trough in a year and a half

In early 2025, memecoins reached a record share of the altcoin market, with a dominance ratio of more than 0.11. Since then, that ratio has fallen almost without interruption. It now hovers around 0.026, a level lower than any previously recorded point in the available data, which goes back to mid-2022.

The decline reflects a significant drop in investors’ willingness to shift capital into memecoins. Similar periods of low interest have in the past sometimes been followed by a recovery when speculative interest flared up again, but there is no sign of a structural reversal at this point.

Analyst: recovery still out of sight for most

Darkfost notes that a few individual memecoins are beginning to show signs of recovery, but that this still concerns a small minority. He also points to activity on the FOMO platform, while stressing that caution remains warranted.

The question Darkfost raises is whether such an extreme lack of interest could in time provide the spark for a new memecoin season. Historically, such troughs have in some cases preceded recovery periods, but that certainly offers no guarantee. Meanwhile, buying pressure on Bitcoin appears to be increasing, which could suggest that capital in the market is for now flowing towards the larger assets rather than into more speculative memecoins.
