Robinhood CEO wants to manage Trump Accounts and defends trading
Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev said in an interview with The New York Times that the company is working with the US government to manage so-called Trump Accounts. At the same time, he responds to criticism that Robinhood encourages young people to gamble. The platform wants to shed its meme stock image and is growing into a comprehensive financial platform.
Trump Accounts: Saving for the Next Generation
Trump Accounts, included in tax law as 530A accounts, became available this month. Children born between 2025 and 2028 will receive a $1.000 deposit from the government into a tax-deferred investment account through these accounts. Parents can manage the accounts via an app that Robinhood co-develops.
Robinhood is one of the companies selected by the Trump administration to operate these accounts. This places the platform in a strategically advantageous position: it is thus building a relationship with the next generation of investors and strengthening its ties with Washington. The company has already removed some controversial features that made the platform attractive to inexperienced investors, but criticism that the platform exposes vulnerable users to risk is growing precisely now due to the rise of prediction markets, which Robinhood has meanwhile also integrated into the app.
Trading Is Not Gambling, Says Tenev
When asked whether Robinhood encourages young people to gamble, Tenev is clear: trading in any form should not simply be labelled as gambling. Speculation, he says, is an essential part of financial markets. Without speculators making predictions about future prices, markets simply would not function, he argues.
Tenev wants Robinhood to look beyond its reputation as a platform for meme stocks. The goal is to grow into a financial one-stop shop that covers all asset classes and financial transactions worldwide. That he himself believes in the company’s direction is evident from the fact that more than 90% of his personal wealth is invested in Robinhood shares.
