S&P Global acquires smart contract security firm OpenZeppelin
Financial data and ratings company S&P Global is acquiring OpenZeppelin, one of the best-known security companies in the smart contract world. With the acquisition, S&P Global aims to expand its risk assessment to the onchain technology layer. Financial details are not disclosed. OpenZeppelin will continue to operate as an independent division under its own name, led by CEO Demian Brener.
In brief:
- S&P Global announces the acquisition of OpenZeppelin, founded in 2015 as a security standard for onchain finance.
- OpenZeppelin has carried out more than 900 security audits, and the company’s smart contract library underpins more than $37 trillion in transferred value.
- After the acquisition, OpenZeppelin will remain active as a separate division under its own name.
OpenZeppelin manages infrastructure behind billions in digital value
OpenZeppelin was founded in 2015 and in the years that followed built one of the most widely used open-source smart contract libraries in the world. The company’s contracts form the basis for a large part of the largest stablecoins and tokenised funds. In total, more than $37 trillion in value has been transferred through this infrastructure.
In addition to the library, OpenZeppelin has performed more than 900 security audits for protocols and institutions active in the digital asset market. More than 10,000 vulnerabilities were identified before software went into production. Both DeFi platforms and traditional financial institutions use the company’s technology and expertise.
S&P Global strengthens position in digital asset market
According to the S&P Global press release, the acquisition aligns with the broader strategy of providing reliable data, benchmarks and risk assessments to markets that increasingly operate onchain. Yann Le Pallec, president of S&P Global Ratings, says that OpenZeppelin’s technology complements its own assessment capabilities for smart contracts and onchain technology.
Le Pallec states that this gives both traditional financial institutions and DeFi companies more certainty to build and transact in this environment. The acquisition also expands OpenZeppelin’s own reach: through S&P Global’s network and reputation, the company can reach more organisations that are taking the step towards onchain markets. This fits within a broader trend in which institutional interest in onchain markets is increasing.
Demian Brener will remain at the head of OpenZeppelin as CEO and will report to Le Pallec. The acquisition is still subject to the usual closing conditions. S&P Global expects no material impact on its own financial results.
