Vitalik Buterin reveals Ethereum roadmap: Lean Ethereum is coming

Vitalik Buterin shares a comprehensive update on the future of Ethereum. Under the banner “Lean Ethereum”, the protocol is working towards its third major evolution, following the Merge as the second. The next three to four years will be marked by large-scale changes to nearly every component of the protocol, from cryptography to the execution layer.

Ethereum is available at OKX and Bybit.

What exactly is Lean Ethereum?

Lean Ethereum is not a one-off upgrade, but a series of improvements rolled out step by step. Buterin compares it to the Merge: a fundamental reform in which nearly everything is replaced. One of the biggest changes is the introduction of recursive STARKs as a native verification method, instead of direct re-execution of transactions. STARKs thus become a first-class component of the protocol itself.

In addition, quantum security receives much higher priority. Everything vulnerable to quantum computers is replaced by post-quantum alternatives. Buterin indicates that the design of quantum-safe blobs has become urgent and that this work has been ongoing for months. Privacy is no longer an afterthought either: when designing new components such as Frames and the mempool, the team explicitly asks how privacy transactions will pass through them.

New state model and scaling

One of the most far-reaching parts of the plan is the change in how Ethereum handles “state”. The idea is to largely keep the current dynamic state model intact, but add a new type of state that scales better. By 2030, this could result in 2 TB of dynamic state and as much as 100 TB of the new, scalable type. For tokens such as ERC20s and NFTs, this could reduce transaction costs by more than 10x. Complex contracts such as those of Uniswap or on-chain order books remain in the existing model.

Regarding the virtual machine, Ethereum is exploring the use of RISC-V or leanISA alongside the existing EVM. Buterin states that the EVM could eventually become a compiler function, while the protocol itself only sees RISC-V or leanISA. He also announces that the upcoming Glasterdam upgrade will bring a significant increase in the gas limit. The Ethereum price is currently at $1.770, an increase of 0.6% in the past 24 hours. Earlier, analysts reported that Ethereum withdrawals on Binance reached the highest level in three years, reflecting increased confidence in the network.
